Phishing is the act of pretending to be part of an organization, or a trustworthy entity in an attempt at gaining personal information such as passwords, credit card details, and other personal information. These scams are normally in the form of messages, emails, or even websites that mimic the original ones. To be aware of the phishing scams, one should know the tell-tale signs such as the use of general greetings, using a sense of urgency and/or threat, using embedded or attached files. Also, verify the sender’s email address for minor spelling errors and compare the URL of the links within the message with the link it claims to lead to. It is always important to be careful when someone asks for personal details particularly if the offer looks too good to be true.

Phishing scams can be prevented by adopting simple procedures and paying more attention. Firstly, never click on links or download attachments from unknown or suspicious sources. Make sure your accounts have multi-factor authentication (MFA) to help protect your information from being stolen. Ensure that you use the current versions of the software you are using, as well as the security measures you have in place to counter the risks. Spread awareness among yourself and your friends about the new tricks of phishing and if you find any, you should immediately report it to the concerned authorities. This way, one can be safe from falling for the phishing scams and have their personal details protected.
